Precast concrete countertops make it possible to create a custom kitchen surface with a clean, polished look. In this project, the countertops were formed upside down, reinforced with fiberglass mesh, polished, and sealed before installation.
From Forms to Finished Countertops
The crew first built smooth, watertight forms. Because precast countertops are poured upside down, the form surface becomes the visible countertop surface after the pieces are flipped.
A ready-to-use countertop mix was combined with water and gray pigment, then poured into the forms. Fiberglass mesh was added about halfway through the pour for reinforcement. After the concrete cured for a few days, the forms were removed and the countertops were flipped over.
Polishing and Sealing
The surface was lightly ground with a 100-grit resin pad. A slurry coat filled small pinholes, followed by a final polish after the slurry cured.
Once clean, the countertops received approximately four coats of sealer. The sealed countertops were then ready to be installed in the kitchen.
