A worn, painted, or plain concrete patio does not always need to be replaced. In this project, Decorative Concrete of Virginia transformed an older patio into a slate-style surface using a sprayed concrete overlay, custom tape pattern, and protective sealer.
Creating the New Finish
The patio was pressure-washed and ground to remove paint and surface buildup. After acid-etching and rinsing, the crew applied a light-gray base coat.
Once the base coat cured, tape was placed to create the slate pattern. A darker gray overlay was sprayed over the tape and lightly troweled to create a knockdown texture.
After the tape was removed, the slate-style pattern was revealed. The patio was then cleaned and sealed with two coats of clear sealer for added protection.
Patterned sprayed overlays can refresh patios, walkways, pool decks, and other concrete surfaces with decorative colors and textures.
