A peeling or worn patio does not always need to be completely replaced. With proper surface preparation, a decorative concrete overlay, custom stain, and protective sealer, an existing patio can receive a new finish and a completely different appearance.
After grinding the existing surface to remove paint, the crew primed the concrete and applied two coats of a textured overlay. The first coat established the base, while the second was applied by hand to create a smoother, more natural finish. Existing control joints were re-cut after the overlay cured so they could continue to function as intended.
The next day, the patio was stained using a custom blend of Onyx and Mahogany to create a coffee-colored finish. The crew then applied a solvent-based acrylic sealer in thin coats. Because the patio was next to a pool deck, grit was added to the sealer to provide additional traction.
Planning a Stained Concrete Overlay?
This DCVA project shows how a peeling painted patio can be transformed with surface preparation, a decorative concrete overlay, custom stain, and protective sealer. A stained overlay can create a seamless, textured finish with color variation that complements the outdoor space.
