Painting an outdoor patio may seem like the fastest way to refresh plain concrete, but a stained concrete patio can create a more natural-looking finish with color that becomes part of the surface rather than simply covering it. In this project, Decorative Concrete of Virginia transformed a screened porch patio with a light tan, water-based concrete stain and a protective sealed finish.
Preparing the Patio
The crew cleaned the concrete with an acid wash and pressure washer to remove dirt and prepare the surface. Because the patio had a light broom finish, grinding was not required.
Adding Color and Protection
A thin coat of water-based stain was brushed onto the concrete. After it dried, additional stain was lightly sprayed to create subtle variation and reduce the appearance of gray concrete showing through.
The patio was then sealed with an acrylic sealer containing grit to improve traction when wet. The finished surface has a warmer color, added character, and a more inviting appearance.
