From Epoxy to Polyaspartic: How Garage Floor Coatings Evolved

When we started installing epoxy garage floors over 25 years ago, epoxy was simply the best option available. We’d apply a vinyl flake epoxy floor coating, then seal it with an epoxy topcoat and even add a third coat of polyurethane on top to slow down the yellowing.

It helped, but it was fighting a losing battle. Give it a few years and that epoxy garage floor coating would take on an amber tint, no matter what we did. That’s not a knock on the work, it’s just the limitation of the material.

When manufacturers developed polyaspartic coatings, everything changed. Polyaspartic is UV stable by nature, meaning it won’t yellow or amber out in sunlight the way epoxy topcoats do. It’s also more flexible, so it holds up better through temperature swings without peeling or cracking.

Today we use polyaspartic as our topcoat over vinyl flake on every garage floor we install, same great look, built to actually last.

Who We Are

OUR STORY

In 2001, a family vacation changed everything. While away, our dad—then a successful home builder—spotted a crew installing a decorative concrete overlay. Intrigued, he walked over, asked questions, and even jotted down the name from the bag of materials they were using. A few weeks later, we were on a plane to Florida for hands-on training.

What began as a side project soon became a passion. Our eye for quality and craftsmanship, paired with our growing expertise, transformed decorative concrete of virginia from a part time hustle into our full-time calling.

In 2010, our good friend Landon—who had been running his own landscaping business—partnered with us. Together, we expanded into polished concrete and commercial coatings, adding even more ways to bring beauty and durability to floors across Virginia.

Today, Decorative Concrete of Virginia is still family-owned and built on the same principles that started it all: hard work, quality craftsmanship, and treating every project like it’s for our own home.

It started with a spark of curiosity… and grew into a legacy of concrete artistry.
