How to Form, Pour, and Finish a Stamped Concrete Patio, this explains the process step by step. Preparation begins with excavation, a compacted gravel base, and wooden forms set to the desired shape and slope. Once reinforcement is in place, concrete is poured, leveled, and edged to create a smooth surface with control joints. The slab is then colored using a dry-shake color hardener, followed by a release agent that prevents stamps from sticking while adding depth and variation. Stamping tools are pressed into the surface to create realistic patterns, and detail work finishes the edges. After curing, the patio is cleaned and sealed to protect against weather and enhance appearance. The result is a strong, stylish patio that blends durability with decorative appeal.

The process starts with site preparation: excavating, compacting a gravel base, and setting wooden forms to establish shape and slope. Concrete is then poured, leveled, edged, and scored with control joints. Seay introduces color via a dry-shake color hardener, followed by a release agent to prevent stamps from sticking while enhancing depth and coloration. Large pattern stamps are pressed into the partially set surface, with smaller texture tools used for edges and tight areas. After stamping, the forms are removed, excess release agent is cleaned off, and a protective sealer is applied to lock in color, add sheen, and boost weather resistance—resulting in a long-lasting, stone-like patio.

As the concrete is begining to set, we’ll come in and stamp your pattern in. Once it fully cures, we’ll come back stain and seal it.

Previous Construction

We also offer stamped overlays that provide the look of stamped concrete to existing concrete areas. This is perfect for people who are looking to make changes to their existing driveways, sidewalks, patios or whatever other concrete surfaces, without the expense of a complete tear-out. We’ll pour a thin layer of high-quality concrete and then stamp in your favorite pattern. This is a quick and low-cost solution for updating you property.

Who We Are

OUR STORY

In 2001, a family vacation changed everything. While away, our dad—then a successful home builder—spotted a crew installing a decorative concrete overlay. Intrigued, he walked over, asked questions, and even jotted down the name from the bag of materials they were using. A few weeks later, we were on a plane to Florida for hands-on training.

What began as a side project soon became a passion. Our eye for quality and craftsmanship, paired with our growing expertise, transformed decorative concrete of virginia from a part time hustle into our full-time calling.

In 2010, our good friend Landon—who had been running his own landscaping business—partnered with us. Together, we expanded into polished concrete and commercial coatings, adding even more ways to bring beauty and durability to floors across Virginia.

Today, Decorative Concrete of Virginia is still family-owned and built on the same principles that started it all: hard work, quality craftsmanship, and treating every project like it’s for our own home.

It started with a spark of curiosity… and grew into a legacy of concrete artistry.
